Consider also that this is not just a case of using a name to promote sales
in another sector. All companies try to leverage technology and
manufacturing capability into as many related sectors as possible to
amortize the investment and thus maintain competetive pricing. Given the
investment in optical modeling, materials technology and manufacturing
processes that it takes to produce Leica cameras, the prices would be much
higher unless Leitz was able to use that same investment base to support
surveying equipment.
Additionally I suspect that civil engineers are more likely to buy Leica
cameras in their high paid later years having used Leica surveying
equipment just after graduation from college than the other way around.

That's the main point here, isn't it? If Leica continues to make their
cameras as they have, or better, I don't care if they make salt water
taffey
as a sideline, as long as it doesn't get in the way of the quality of their
cameras. We will know soon enough if they change. And it would be foolhardy
if they give up on the one single reason people continue to buy them.
Collectible as they are, they wouldn't be if they were true Leicas.
