We've been using the Nikon LS-1000 in our journalism lab for as many years as the product's been available. We have three of them. They perform flawlessly. We use the Nikon software plug-in with Photoshop 4. It's a *little* clunky, but easy to understand. Haven't used it on System 8 w/Macintosh yet, though. The mechanisms are durable (haven't yet broken down, knocking on wood...). The film carrier is a pretty flimsy thing; we bent one, but it still works. I've heard the same complaint from many others regarding the film carrier. If it were in my private lab it wouldn't be a problem...in a many-user lab you should keep more than one film carrier handy. My lab tech tells me the device sells currently for $1699 in the usual mail-order catalogs. - -Gary S. Colby University of La Verne La Verne, California
