James,
I've used the 2X Extender for the SL/SL-2 for some time.  Of course it's
biggest drawback is the loss of 2 f-stops.
Using the Extender with the 180mm f2.8 ElmaritR would give you a good deal
of flexibility and excellent results.  I used this combination in Alaska
with Kodachrome 200 and was quite happy that I didn't have to lug around a
huge telephoto for the few times I needed to be isolated from dangerous game
(grizzly bears).
Use a tripod and stop down a bit, if possible.
