Eric Welch,

    >>Leica lenses seem to need less stopping down then most other lenses<<

Per the BAS charts, lenses that are excellent ( sharpness & contrast ) at
full aperture, & stopping down only slightly improves performance, would
be;
a.) 100mm apo Macro  b.) 180 f2 apo. c.) 180 f3.4 apo. d.) 280 f4 apo. e.)
400 2.8
apo. f.) Vario 70-180 f2.8 apo. BAS Charts are dated July 1996.

To this list I would add the new 180 f2.8 apo; results from a batch of Fuji
Astia are awesome. When comparing the Vario 70-180 f2.8 apo with the 180
f2.8
apo, f2.8 thru f8 ( using Astia ); differences were harder to discern, than
when I
used E200. However, with both Astia & E200, contrast performance with the
180 f2.8 seemed better; colors were more saturated.

All of this is based on my eye/loupe/light table; I've not yet seen any MTF
charts on either the Vario 70-180 apo or the 180 f2.8 apo. Someone else
might be able to comment on their respective MTF charts. Anyway, I'm pretty
much done testing the 180 f2.8 apo; it's time to get some great shots ;-)!
