I hope someone with actual legal qualifications (?MS) can clafify this for me:

I often see items advertised here and elsewhere 'with passport warranty' or
sometimes as above, warranty offered'through' the seller/original owner.

Having been in the audio business in a former life, I have seen actual
assignable warranties, which are written as such by the manufacturer and
included with the original purchase. These, of course, can be transmitted
at sale by the original owner. Most warranties state explicitly "to the
original owner" and are obviously NOT transferrable. It would seem that
for the original owner/seller to attempt to receive service on behalf of
the new 'used' buyer might be some kind of fraud.

Does Leica have a transferrable warranty? (I've never bought Leica new).
Has anyone had any experience with using 'someone else's' original warranty
for Leica service?

Does "with passport warranty" on a used piece of equipment actually have
any legal standing? If not, why does it seem to be a desireable element in
a piece of used equipment being advertised.

hoping for enlightenment
