Congratulations are in order, to your wife on her upcoming Leica! My
wife was also the recipient of a Canon ELPH and had sharpness problems
with it also. I expected it not to perform up to Leica standards or
course, plus the smaller APS format adds to the problem. I mounted the
little fellow on a Leica table tripod (carefully...the ELPH's tripod bush
is plastic!) and took some test shots on ISO 100 film using the delayed
action. My conclusion is that much of the ELPH's sharpness losses are
accountable to camera shake...hard to avoid what with the minuscule size
and slowish lens. The point to this all is that all "mini" cameras to a
certain extent seem rather sensitive to holding technique, and the zoom
models because of their slower lenses, are even more so. Those of us
with experience handle it in stride, but our happy-snapper spousal units
might benefit from some help in that area. BTW, the ELPH now accompanies
me everywhere in my coatpocket and it has performed surprisingly well
when called upon.

Regards,
Nigel
