One film is more than enough to evaluate a lens, as long as the lens hasn't been damaged. If a shop keeper wouldn't let me even step outside to expose a few frames, I'd just prop a tripod by an open door or window. I would put more stock in a single *frame* I shot with the lens than someone else's fully-executed test.
