Because of the design of the lenses, which protruded further into the camera that previously available R lense, they could not be used on the SL or the Leicaflexes. If they were used, the mirror and the rear of the lenses would be damaged. To avoid this problem with the SL2, the mirror was designed to retract and then rise at the release of the shutter button. I have heard of SL and Leicaflex users modifying the mirror with a cut-away portion on the bottom of the mirror so that these lenses could be used.
