Steve,

Horst is right, Fasching (or Fastnacht here in the Deep South) starts at
11:11AM on the 11th of November. No Armistice Day connection other than
coincidence. The clebrations don't really hit their stride until the week
before Lent, but that is the official start. My wife is a member of the
local "Narrenzunft" or Carival Club and I have to put up with it each year.
Once and I while I get some fun photos though. There are a lot of local
differences in the celebrations, those in Mainz have little to do with the
ones here in Southern Baden, along the Swiss Border. One of these days I
will go to those in Basel said to be quite interesting and taking place a
week later than all the rest...

This of course has nothing to do with Oktoberfest or Leicas though I take
my M6 each year.
