Spam is the cyberspace equivalent of junk mail: useless, unsollicited electronic
mail messages, typically advertising products or perpetuating chain letters.
The most common spam seems to involve advertisements for pornographic web sites,
miracle health cures, or get-rich-quick schemes. Since all of these tend to
appeal most to persons of limited cognitive capacity, it seems that spam is
oriented towards very stupid audiences. The fact that it continues implies that
a lot of stupid people out there respond to the messages or buy the products.

Spam is so named in reference to a food product called SPAM, manufacturered by
Hormel, Inc., in the United States. SPAM is a meat product made from ham that
most people either hate with a passion or love dearly; I presume that the ones
who used the name to refer to junk e-mail are the ones who hate SPAM.
