My LS-2000 was defective right out of the box, and the LS-30 is showing odd
behavior at times as well.  Nikon has told me that it may cost as much as $600
to repair their manufacturing defect.  Others have told me that the rate of
returns on the Coolscan scanners runs as high as 40%.

All the _other_ products I've bought from Nikon have been free of defects.
Their scanners, however, are a mass of defects, it seems.  They do an extremely
nice job (better than any competitor) when they work, but they only work about
half the time.
