He said they didn't improve significantly when stopped down. This is presumably due to the fact that the entire lens is very well corrected for all aberrations. Examples of this in the M range are the 90 APO ASPH and the 135 APO Telyt. The 100 APO Macro-R and the 180 APO Elmarit-R also qualify in this regard.
