The winder is actived by releasing the shutter release on the body. It takes a little getting used to, because in using the winder if one does not imediately "lift off" the shutter release button, the camera will fire again. But after becoming accustomed, it is not necessary to lift the rewind arm to limit the camera to a single shot, simply don't linger with the shutter release button held down. By the way, if you are deciding between the two, the winder's speed make it more of an electric thumb than a device suited to fast sequence photography. If you need speed, it's the motor drive you want, not the winder. Enjoy your new R8. And enjoy the light. Greg
