If sharpness were the only criterion by which images were judged you might
have a point.  But I think you forgot about issues like contrast (which is
well resolved by digital sensors), flare (ditto), field curvature (ditto),
and the character of out-of-focus portions of the image (again ditto).

If sharpness of the in-focus portion of the image is your only criterion,
you don't need to go all the way to digital arrays to find lenses which will
match Leica, for most normal photography.  Fortunately, that's not all there
is to life (or lenses).
