jem kime mentions the cooke amatol 50f2 which i have on bell and howel
fotons. i believe they called their normal 100m likewise but they also had
a unigue l00mm that staggers the mind. based on technology they developed
for motion pictures to surpass even the famous depth of focus shots in
citizen kane, they labelled this lens deep focus. twenty years ago i compared
sharpness with the regular 100 and they were equal at focus plane. the deep
focus had much greater depth of field front and back listed right on the
footage scales. my question is does anybody know how they cheated the rigid
laws of optics around 1950? phillip griffths-jones of magnum thinks they
incorporated what later became teleextenders. though a 2x teleexter does
retain the depth of field of the original lens(a 4 f-stop gain) there is a
4x penalty in speed and these were f2 (t2.2 for actual transmission another
thc first) does any one have definitive knowledge or a better idea of this
optical shell game? did deep focus ever appear on any other
camera or why not? anything on foton please use rof@mac.com
