Wonderful news that the R3, & 4 battery covers fit the M6. I quickly checked 
and sure enough the battery covers from my Minolta XD-7 and XD-11 also fit 
the M6.
Even more wonderful is the fact that my M6 battery cover fits the Minoltas. 
Now I can walk around with my Minolta around my neck, knowing that I can 
flash the bottom of my camera with it's leatherete covered battery 
compartment to show proper membership in the Leica club if it becomes 
necessary.

     Instead of modifying the battery cover on your M6, you could purchase a
 replacement which is slotted to accept a coin to loose it. It doesn't have
 the leatherette, but it is more functional. Also, a battery cover from an
 R3/4/5 will work.
     They are available from Leica Parts.
