>>what would a purple filter do to b&w film?<<

It would make the Minnesota Viking road uniforms look like home uniforms.

As Doug Herr said, Photoshop can probably provide some answers. I've learned
a great deal in Photoshop. Much of it about plain ole' color photography,
not neccessarily digital imaging.

Even better than Photoshop is my 30-year-old book on Color that was a
special publication from an encyclopedia company. Best explaination of color
theory I've ever run across. Beats the dozen or so other books on color that
I own. The "Color" book outlined theory, but it also had many great
examples. It had a section on photography, but also color blindness.

As a kid I marveled at the print quality. Don't know how they did it, but
the printing was ahead of it's time. Sadly, I seem to have misplaced it, and
I never have seen another one like it. I know it would have answer some of
your question. Someone else might know what book I'm referring to. I don't
even know the publisher and can't recall the name.
