For those long, annoying URL's, this generally works a treat:

www.makeashorterlink.com

(as far as I know it's a non profit thing run by geeks who got fed up with
long URL's....)

Although in this case:

http://www.nytimes.com/2002/05/23/arts/design/23MEYE.html
should get you there
