IR cleaning is the same as Digital ICE in the Nikon software. It's a software routine in the scanner driver that uses information produced by a fourth infrared channel in the scanner (hence RGBI - red, green, blue, infrared). Dust and scratches are opaque to infrared light, and therefore the IR channel is black except where there are dust specks and scratches, at which points it's clear. The software uses the contrast in the IR channel to detect the presence of dust and automatically interpolates the surrounding good image data into the empty hole left by the dust. Voila - automatic spotting. In Vuescan you can set IR cleaning to one of three levels - light, medium and heavy. Each successive level will remove larger dust spots more completely, but with an increase in overall image degradation. I find that "medium" has very little effect on overall image sharpness, while still removing almost all evidence of dust and schmutz.
