I forgot you had been hanging out with Gene Richards ;-) You are right. There are documentary photographers who do commercial work to pay for their own projects. Not many, but then the exposure possibilities for personal projects is very limited these days. I've been very lucky in that I have complete control over the photos that are used in most of my projects. Not true with stock, though, where the editors always choose the weakest photo in the submission!
