We have to replace IT equipment because students expect to be trained on the "latest". I'm happily working on a Celeron 700mHz, with a 15" monitor that I've cobbled together. Back to cameras, a pro-photographer who we will probably do a program with, just bought three Camedias at about $500 each - complete closeout - CompUSA bought the whole line. He just took one to Cuba and took all his photographs with them - excellent work. The other two are for when the first and then the second stop working. You're right, he doesn't expect to be trading up for quality, extra functions etc. Stuart Phillips - -----Original Message----- From: B. D. I may be crazy, Stuart, but I think that for many people the quality of the pro equipment has now reached the point where - equipment failures aside - - it won't be necessary to trade it in - (run it over with a truck) each time a new model comes along....of course it will still be necessary for major improvements, for instance when Nikon and Canon go to full frame chips. But otherwise I'd guess that pros can get several years out of the latest equipment. And don't forget that if one has the sense and self-discipline to deposit the money one is saving in film and processing costs, one can easily replace equipment every year or two and not feel it..... And I thought I was cynical! I agree - digital is sure here to stay. Having said that. The prices are high and I'd love to see how a lot of this gear is being paid for in billings. The in-built obsolescence of much of digital equipment is frightening however, and at least in my field (IT training), it's a race as to whether you can get a return from the equipment before it breaks, becomes outdated etc. Stuart Phillips - -----Original Message----- From: B. As of this a.m., the Nikon D1x at about $4650, D1h at $3560, D100 at $1995, and Canon D60 at $2195, are ALL out-of-stock at B&H - but no problem finding a Leica M7, M6 or R8. And, for that matter, I wonder if anyone noted the fact that on this week's LUG sale day one of the dealers was already offering M7 demos at below the price of a new M6? That sure doesn't bode well this soon after the camera's much heralded release. B. D.
