I can't help but wonder if the fascination doesn't stem from the fact that everyone is so used to seeing them on modern SLRs, and there is some sort of belief that there must be something wrong with the Leica if it doesn't have a grip. BTW, Tom Abrahamson's Rapid Winder definitely improves the handling of the M when shooting vertically, as the added weight and increased camera depth, coupled with the long rewind lever, create a neat little tripod arrangement for holding the camera steady for vertical shots, particularly when using longer/heavier lenses. I'm on the Digest, so this might be way late to the topic, but... An inexpensive grip can be made from the end of a broom handle, or 1" diameter x 5" dowels with one rounded end sold by American Science & Surplus http://www.sciplus.com/stymied.cfm (for 25 cents ea.) Drill a hole for a 1/4-20 bolt-screw combination, screw it into the wood, cut to proper tripod depth, cover end of wood with self-adhesive felt, and voila! a Gene Smith handle. I made 'em for all my cameras, some cut down to a 2" length for when I have two cameras one above the other. I like the way they match the rounded end of the M's and fit against your palm. For street shooting, I wrap the strap around my wrist, and the handle gives me leverage on the camera. It works nicely in the tripod socket of the 135 with eyes too.
