See, I missed all that, due to the mighty power of selective attention.

But just as there can be no LUG without TED, there can be no TED without the
LUG. No doubt his inbox is bursting with frantic appeals from the faithful
even now.

Not being an American is now an "idiosyncrasy"... ;-) One of my old German
friends (father figure, really), Henri, sole survivior of his regiment (or
whatever, I'm not up on the military stuff) in the Crimean campaign, told me
his classics lectures started at university with the words: "Ladies and
gentlemen! Jesus Christ was an idiot. And anyone whose knowledge of Greek is
so poor that he finds that statement offensive can leave the lecture hall
immediately." Henri went on to translate the Republic into German as a
passtime while a POW in England and had it confiscated for his pains when he
was released in 46. He changed his name to its French equivalent because of
his hatred for everything that the Germany of the Voelkische Beobachter
stood for. I'll never forget his description of the joy of tossing a live
handgrenade back at the Russians who had thrown it at him and hearing their
screams when it exploded in his face. His comments on Faust Zweiter Teil
were worth hearing as well.

And what does all that have to do with Ted? Beats me.

R.
