What will it mean to future generations? What will people want to remember? What might be visually interesting? What might a stranger want to see? Second, try your damndest - and this is really hard - to view the event and shoot it as an outsider might: the more you can separate your personal emotional baggage from your shooting, the better the work will be from a documentary point of view. Third, always keep in mind that the only things that show up on film will be those sights you see through the viewfinder. The person looking at your prints will not know what someone said just before you released the shutter, won't know what music was playing, what food was cooking, etc. And finally - GET CLOSE.:-) B. B.D. This is the perfect opportunity for me to ask one of the real experts........... I have a family reunion happening first week of October and although I am not photographing officially, because it is for the decendants of my grandfather I though I would have a crack at covering the event. My Aunts have hired the local showground and there are about 240 people attending, the whole event lasting from Friday night till Monday morning. Lighting will probably be full sun (Mid spring in Australia) and possibly quite warm. Could I ask you or any other Luggers for as much advice as you care to share? My only fixed requirement is that I will should use only colour film. This so that I can have them all scanned and I will have my choice of B&W or colour from any neg. I am not, nor have I ever been a photojournalist, so any tricks of the trade or ideas for this project would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Rob "B. D.
