It's time to point out that the bleeping Emperor is stark raving naked - and more than a bit mad! What is the theory here - call yourself a photographer - or, in this case, a "street photographer/documentary photographer" and you ARE one? Drop a load of crap off at Kinkos for printing and you are a PUBLISHED photographer? Over the past year or two numerous people on this and other lists have looked at Alfie's work and tried to offer him constructive criticism. And he has ignored all of it - which would be fine if he exhibited one scintilla of talent or originality and was developing a unique style and vision. But he hasn't, and he isn't... The idea that someone would hold himself out as a "photographer" whose work is worth of collecting - with an autograph for God's sake?! - while offering this kind of crap - and I use the word advisedly - to the world is truly appalling. I know that there will be those of you who will say that I am being mean spirited, nasty, or any number of other things. What I am being is honest. What Alfie is doing is demeaning and insulting to all of us who have spent years working at our craft - whether as hobbyists or professionals - honing our skills to the point where we can honestly say, "I am a photographer." Please, for the sake of your own integrity as photographers, do not continue to humor him and play along with this insulting nonsense. B. D. Colen - -----Original Message----- From: owner-leica-users@mejac.palo-alto.ca.us [mailto:owner-leica-users@mejac.palo-alto.ca.us]On Behalf Of Albert Wang Sent: Friday, September 06, 2002 9:23 AM To: leica-users@mejac.palo-alto.ca.us Subject: [Leica] FS: Photo books and prints by Albert Wang, first three copies for free. For sale: 1) Postcards of an Existentialist Paperback Monograph Postcards of an Existentialist, despite its title isn't a French existentialist treatise but in terms of its outlook of life influenced by Samuel Beckett, Jean-Paul Sartre, Eugene Richards, Eric Dolphy, and Ornette Coleman. It is a personal two-year (2001-2) diary about one man's coming to terms with his own depression and loneliness as he returns from graduate school back to the city where he moved away from. It's a dour yet ironic and bitterly humorous portrait of Philadelphia (w/ a few shots of New York City) and it's a stark contrast to any of the daintily pretty pictures we tend to see of the Liberty Bell or Independence Hall. Instead, what we have here is a brutally honest photo-journal of a documentary take of the photographer being viewed with suspicion and distrust or ignorance. It's a visual illustration of the quote from Cool Hand Luke: "What we have here is a failure to communicate." The 107 page book is printed in halftone with plastic covers. The dimension of the book is 8.5 inches by 11 inches. Cost of the book: $30 plus $10 shipping and handling. 2) Complete set of all 96 prints done by the photographer himself and signed on verso. The only size I can print at is 8.5 inches by 11 inches. The prints are sleeved in an archival quality Itoya binder.
