Back when I did weddings, I saw the "charge by the print" model as a way of rewarding me for doing a good job. If I took good pictures, I'd sell more prints.

Now that scanners and inkjet printers exist I'd have to re-think my whole approach; such devices are surely going to cut into the per-print revenue.

Another advantage of selling prints and not the photography service is that you can divide the money up among the relatives. If you charge a bunch of money up front and then give the prints away, it's the bride's father who pays for it. As the father of three unmarried college-age daughters I have an issue with that, but as a businessman I recognized that not only could I sell pictures to the newlyweds and their parents, I could sell prints to all of the relatives, if they were good pictures.
