I was very very impressed with him in the late eighties, but he seems to have lost a lot of his edge. "Last Resort" is pretty good, but "Small World" about global tourism really failed to make any kind of sustained point, despite the occasional excellent snap. His work was getting formulaic at that point, maybe something he was reacting to himself when he started doing the ring-flash closeup shots of baked beans and so on, which were quite effective to my mind, taken as a body of work, although few pictures really stood out. I haven't seen the new book. I think he taught my wife briefly in the early eighties before he became a superstar. AFAIK he uses nikon 35 mm and medium format equipment. The tourism subject is fascinating and so rich, but I've yet to see anything that really makes something of it. Something I've got in the back of my head. - -- Rob http://www.robertappleby.com Mobile: (+39) 348 336 7990 Home: (+39) 059 303436 - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrew Amundsen" <andy@tcinternet.net> To: <leica-users@mejac.palo-alto.ca.us> Sent: Saturday, September 28, 2002 8:35 PM Subject: [Leica] Kyle 'Parr' Cassidy > Move over Martin Parr! : > > http://www.asc.upenn.edu/usr/cassidy/pix/paw/2002/37/index.html > > I just happened to be looking over Martin Parr's new book, and have a > greater appreciation for his work.
