I wonder if a photographer has ever documented this whole subculture, which to me seems entirely bizarre - it would make a great subject. I remember seeing a movie about it a while ago - don't recall the name (it was by the same people who did the excellent "Waiting for Guffman") - at the time I thought it was way over the top, though very funny. After watching the stuff this weekend though, it looks more like a documentary now.
