Most PC monitors display around 100 pixels per inch (monitors display pixels, not dots...). 72DPI came from the number of points per inch in the printing industry. The original Mac's were specifically set up to display 72 PPI on their screen, so what you see is what you get, as far as graphics art was concerned. This was why you could only buy display adapter/monitor combinations made specifically for the Mac. I believe this restriction has been "lifted" for a number of years now.
