I think the reason for this is that you have to lock your iris deadcenter on the rangefinder patch. Let your iris go off-center and the patch will flare or whiteout. So the trick is when looking through viewfinder is to lock onto it in deadcenter and if you see it flare make a minute adjustment with your eye to bring it back on-center. Also, I think there are many people who keep their eye socket a small distance from the viewfinder, for whatever reason, which makes the flare worse. I wear glasses yet have never had a problem with flare on any of my five Ms. Also as a technique, I think of my eye socket and two hands as a tripod holding the camera very steady even at a 1/2 second exposure.
