Ted,
I've flown a couple times in the US recently and had very good 
experiences getting my film hand examined.  All I did was ask nicely, 
mention that I had fast film, and a supervisor was called over to do 
the exam.  Everyone involved was quite friendly and quick, I think it 
added about 4 minutes to the regular security check.  As far as I can 
tell there is a big difference between the Federal screeners, and the 
people they had before.
