The trick is that the screeners are taught to look for certain things.
These are not creative people.  So when the X-ray shows a normal camera with
gears, springs, and long skinny sharp things they say, "oh, its a camera"
and move on.

I was flying a lot when the screeners were being field trained and sort of
sat where I could listen in on the training.  It was primarily object
orientated and not "Gosh, what could this thing be."  The only reason they
are interested in your shoes is because of the "shoe bomber."  Before him
you could have six inches of cold steel in your shoe and no one cared.
