Steve is correct that you need an external finder, because the angle of the hood is such that it blocks much of the built-in finder on the IIIf. Personally I just use the lens without a hood and it seems to be fine. The 42mm plastic slip-on cap from B&H fits with a little tape inside to make it snug.
