There are many sources of noise in a digital capture device, but the one that people seem to "focus" on the most is the noise that determines what the minimum signal the CCD can reliably detect. This effects the dark end of the image, and typically only shows up in low light situations, in the darker areas of the image. Film scanners have a similar issue, as they use the same type of sensor.
