When you do a Google search, notice that on the right hand side, you'll see boxes showing sponsored sites. Those sites are paying Google a per-click fee to be listed there. Google AdWords listings are also supplying the search engines for Earthlink, Sympatico, AOLNetFind, and several others. The same holds true for sites like Yahoo and Altavista (InfoSeek, DogPile, etc). Their advertising revenue comes, in part, from a third-party advertising broker, called Overture. One can drive traffic to one's Web site by paying Overture or Google (or others, like LookSmart, etc.) to place site listings in prominent locations based on per-click charges. If you type in a name of a product, in this case, "Leica camera," you'll see that there are usually three listings at the top of the page. Those merchants have paid to be listed as such, and are charged when someone clicks through.
