Jerry,

If someone wants to try to repair something they own, then that is their
decision.  The worst they will do is ruin the item, and hopefully learn
something.  The best they will do is fix the item, and hopefully learn
something.  And any degree of repair in-between, but the point is, they
learn something.  Why denigrate someone for wanting to learn something?

Every person who has any experience repairing things learned somehow, and
the learning process involves making mistakes.  How do you know this guy is
a Leica tyro, he may have been using Leicas for years.

Some mistakes are costlier than others, no doubt, and typically, it's a good
idea to learn on a junker.  Some people enjoy fixing things themselves, and
if they can do it successfully, good for them.  If they make a mistake, and
they have to pay someone else to fix their mistake, that's their
choice...and again, they learn something from it, and it might deter them
from embarking on such a venture in the future.
