Eric,

I would say the 3rd version Summicron I once had was extremely compact. 
But if you really want compact and do not mind a non-Leica lens, then I 
would recommend that you take a look at the Voigtlander 2.5/35mm. It 
comes in a "classic" or normal version, similar in size to the non-ASPH 
Summicron, or a "pancake" version, which is extremely short. I have a 
"classic" for when I want to travel really light, and it performs very 
very well, I would say fully on par with a non-ASPH Summicron.
