The North Rim Village is at about 9000 feet, in Aspen forest, and a bit harder to get to, hence less crowded. The South Rim is around 7000 feet, in high desert, and can be very crowded during tourist season. I prefer the North Rim--I stayed there for several days during the time the aspens turn yellow.
