I would like to jump into this debate on the question of when do you pay a
state/local sales tax. First if you are in a state that has one or both you
pay at the point of sale, no matter where you live. Ever been on a vacation
and had a motel not charge you a room tax, even though you are not from that
state.
OK, B&H they're great and have been doing business with them for 15 or more
years. In that time I have NEVER been inside their store to buy a widget.
They don't charge sales tax, NY or NM as they are shipping out of NY and
they do not have an outlet in NM.
Next, when I purchase a new Rolex for my collection, I travel 45 minutes to
Texas. I make the purchase, fill in a little tax form and the dealer mails
the watch to me in my state. I pay no tax, only the price of registered
mail. If you ever order from Eddie Bauer or J Crew, they will in many
instances hit you with the sales tax of your state, because they have a
retail store somewhere in your state. It's basically that simple.
From the office. Dave
