The 'fly and environment are consistent with the description of the 
Peacock (Inachis io) in the Dorling Kindersley Handbook on Butterflies 
and Moths.   Butterflies can be very approachable when they're chilled 
or damp so it is not surprising that you were able to get this neat 
picture.

I, on the other hand, had to resort to pointing and clicking to produce:

which was designed to rattle the cages of the "serious" lepidopterists.
