I agree and perhaps the Leica R digital back may be too late. Just I wish add that in fact Kodak DCS 14 is a recently launched DSLR with 14Mp (top record) which is using Nikon existing mount. It's too an excellent digital camera with some recoverable defects: battery short life, too noise at 400 ASA but in other aspects it's even better than EOS 1Ds. I have not yet tested the Kodak but if they produced such a camera, Nikon should be able. They have chosen other way: a smaller sized CCD. Leica way, a digital back, is a excellent idea. Only Leica has the lenses with the quality for full format captors. You can too shift from film to digital imaging in the some body, but in my modest opinion future is digital, whatever our wishes could be, and further developments have to be on the digital area. To check this just ask, for some minutes, a borrowed EOS 1Ds and see your pictures on paper. First time you cannot believe it.
