I wish it did have something to do with what he had in mind. The Beethoven comment was directed towards the thought that music was more closely "real" when reproduced with the distortions induced by analog recordings. Beethoven had sound images in his mind. What is heard when one plays a recording is (hopefully) related to those images in some way. My point was that the relationship is not necessarily closer when then the storage medium is an LP record, rather than a CD (which has nothing to do with photography of any kind.) A photograph is a means of conveying what the photographer though was seen or felt at the time of the image, modified and possibly distorted by the technology used to capture the moment. Reality does not enter the picture, so to speak :-) What I am getting at is that analog is not necessarily closer to "reality" than digital -- and may indeed be further from "reality" -- in both the sound and image worlds. Certainly a poor color photo is closer to "reality" in some sense than the best black/white image -- but probably not "better" in any sense. On the other hand, if you say you prefer analog images -- I cannot disagree. Phew -- that was hard to write without using the politically incorrect "he" word. - -- Clive http://clive.moss.net > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-leica-users@mejac.palo-alto.ca.us > [mailto:owner-leica-users@mejac.palo-alto.ca.us] On Behalf Of > Jean-Michel Tomaschett > Sent: Tuesday, August 05, 2003 7:40 PM > To: leica-users@mejac.palo-alto.ca.us > Subject: Re: [Leica] Is It "analog" or Is It Digital? > Drifting OT at tad > > > "analog recorded audio" has nothing to do with what Beethoven > had in mind > when he wrote his music, perhaps you missed one step in the process... > ...and it has to do with Leica photography.
