Somewhat OT? :-) What does it take to be totally OT here? :-)

First and most important question, which dialect? The two most common ones 
are Mandarin (official language) and Cantonese (most HK and a good part of 
oversea Chinese who are from HK). Taiwanese/Fukianese is also very common 
amongst oversea Chinese.

You are learn a lot by clicking on www.zhongwen.com Click on "ma" on the 
pronunciation link got you mother, horse, question, being-mad, first part 
of ants, etc. Lots of stuff.... Have fun.
