I've been out of town and missed the follow-up discussion, but I agree, 
Don.  I defended Patrick on the NPPA list (he's one of the Observer's best 
photographers) and got jumped on for condoning manipulation of 
photographs.  According to some of the opinions here, it would have been 
better for Patrick to move the firefighters to a place with a less 
cluttered background and repeat their hug of grief for the camera.  I don't 
think burning out the background affects the truth of the photograph nearly 
as much as directing the subjects before the photograph is taken.
