Hello,

Today there was open house at the Leica distributor in Holland. Nathan
was also there and we also spoke with Erwin Puts. We had our camera's
checked and I bought a demo winder for my R8.
We fondled a bit with the CM. This is a very nice camera. It really has
the Leica feel. It has all the automatic as well as manual modes. The vf
is much better than the one of the minilux. The lens is the same as that
of the minilux but with a better coating. According to Erwin you won't
see a difference in normal picture taking.
We also saw the new digilux 2. As we all know with the same specs as the
panasonic but with the looks of the CM! It is very big, lens is huge and
not retractable. It has manual focus and zoom equivelant of 28-90. The
vf is of the lcd type. Although you have to get used to it, it is the
only way to avoid the expensive way of the mechanical coupling of the
lens with the vf as we have in the M's.
I already heard some rumors about a new zoom. Well here it was, a
28-90/2.8-4.5asph. Although a prototype it was fully functional and I
made some pictures with it. It is about 1.5-2 times longer than the
35-70 and a bit thicker. The weight is not too much. Unfortunate no
macro setting. Filter size is 67mm. The zoom range is very useful but
90/4.5 is not something I would be very happy with. Erwin assured me
that at 90 it is as good as the 90/2.0AA at the same aperture. The rest
of the range is as good or better than the 35-70.
We couldn't handle the new macro 90. I asked if I can use the extension
ring with other 90's but this is not possible.
The new ultravid binoculars are amazing. These are a class better then
the current Leica and Zeiss binoculars.

Best regards,

Michiel Fokkema
