In my experience using USB rather than parallel makes a _huge_
difference.

As a matter of fact I've just installed a wireless connection myself - I
have a Belkin router attached to my cable Ethernet port and a card in my
PC upstairs. The only problem I had was that after enabling WEP
encryption the PC couldn't 'see' the router - this was solved once I
realised that the 13 character 'password' I entered into the router was
not the same as the code I needed to enter to connect to the router.
Entering the 13 pairs of hex characters that the router suggested rather
than the ASCII password solved that little problem!

<snip>

I suspect the speed increase is down to using USB rather than the
parallel interface.
