For well-exposed negatives, I just scan on Negative, Grayscale, at 4000 dpi, mulitiple scan of 4x, with all ICE controls off. I use the focus adjustment to focus on the eyes. I look at the preview and adjust the histogram for good blacks and whites and scan. If I have a problem negative, I try scanning it with RGB as a color negative and then adjust everything in PhotoShop with Levels and Channels. Hope this helps.
