commenting upon the quality of quality writing. Certainly there are any
number of fabulous writers working today. But "serious" writers have always
been a tiny minority even of those who work with the written word.
I'm also not even referring to the ratio of poor writing to serious and fine
writing. What I was initially pointing out is the marked decline in the
quality of what I'll call 'functional writing,' that is, general written
communication between individuals; business writing; the ability of the
average, high school or college grad to express themselves clearly and
reasonably cleanly in written language - as compared to the ability of
members of the same groups to do so at mid-century.

B.D. Do you mean to imply that serious writers today don't write as well as
