I buy the IDE 200 gb drives that can be had for just under $100 (e.g. 
www.mwave.com) and stick 'em in a $30 aluminum USB box (I've used the 
"Metal Gear Box")-- yes firewire is faster but for my purposes USB 2 is 
fine for backup.

Now if you are after performance, a SATA drive with a large e.g. 8 mb 
buffer is best, else SCSI/RAID -- but that starts to get expensive in 
$/gb.
