The JPEG conversion loses information. The new Adobe proposal is for something to which the digital camera could convert the CCD output, which would contain the same information as the current Camera Raw, but in a format that is the same for all cameras. Of course it will work: if the camera can make a JPEG or a TIFF, it can make the new Adobe format. It's not supposed to be what the CCD produces, nor replace JPEG or TIFF, but be what the flashcard stores instead of raw CCD output. There are no losers in this: no one is required to use it, and to any software that currently can process Camera Raw files, this is just one more format to add to the dozens already supported.
